Consultancy Case Study

Medical University of Bahrain

In early 2005 Lightplus consultants were contacted by MSCEB, a large Engineering Consultancy and Architectural practice based in Bahrain. The Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland had appointed them to design and project manage the construction of a new Medical University campus on a Greenfield site in Bahrain. The campus was to include all the lecture theatres, laboratories, demonstration facilities and administration offices necessary for some 4,000 students. The campus was also to include residential blocks, sports and entertainment facilities for staff and students.

Following detailed discussions with the client, Lightplus consultants prepared a lighting strategy for each of the 1,000 plus rooms on the site. We identified early on in the project the necessity to manage a very large volume of information through what would inevitably be a number of 'iterations' in the design process. As part of the project we developed a powerful software package to identify every light fitting, lamp and control gear; its location, power consumption and supplier; its expected life and cost. Through a comprehensive but simple interface, the client will be able to continue to operate the package as an invaluable maintenance and purchasing tool throughout the life of the project.

Lighting designs were prepared for every major space, including a number of major lighting features. These Lighting Features included a 'Fountain of Knowledge' centrepiece to the campus, from which everything else radiated.

Once we had completed detailed design down to individual luminaire level, Lightplus identified a short-list of suppliers for each light fitting and lamp, including alternative fittings.

The campus is due to accept its first students in September 2007.
